BAPLA Open Letter to Future Publishing Ltd and NewsUK in reference to unfair contracts

British Association of Picture Libraries & Agencies

Over the last few months, we have received reports from members about unfair contract terms they, and their contributing photographers, have been issued with by two major publishers – Future Publishing Ltd and NewsUK. These new contracts, and the inability to negotiate fair terms, have caused significant and undue pressure on both our members and photographers at a time when the coronavirus pandemic is causing economic hardship.

Our members operate across a significant and wide range of different markets providing an array of variable licences on fair terms to customers, on behalf of their contributing photographers, and many publishers they work with appreciate and respect that requirement. We ask that both Future Publishing Ltd, and separately, NewsUK, engage with us to discuss our Open Letter in view of the unreasonable challenges their new terms have placed on our members and the photographers they work so closely with.
