Mary Evans collection of the week: John Frost Newspapers

image

We’ve featured John Frost Newspapers before as Collection of the Week, but a recent submission of new material is certainly worth bringing to the attention of our COTW readers. To recap, John Frost Newspapers is an incredible resource of original newspapers, magazines and press cuttings from the UK and abroad, covering major and minor news events from the Great Fire of London in 1666 to the present day. The archive was established in 1964, coincidentally when Mary Evans Picture Library was also born, having grown out of John Frost’s hobby of collecting papers which began 30 years earlier.

We now have 19,000 John Frost images available for licensing and this recent upload comprises:

Newspaper front pages and features from 1914-1918. Not only does this period give in-depth coverage of the First World War, but it reports widely on domestic news too including royal visits, industrial disputes, society gossip and women’s suffrage. There are cover stories galore on Zeppelin raids, VC awardees, women’s war work and some particularly interesting material on conscientious objectors.

Magazine advertisements from the 1940s. A colourful and nostalgic range of adverts for everything from bile beans and Sno-Mist deodorising powder to Zam-buk foot ointment and Rolex watches, Watch out for topical WWII examples including a Land Girl whose gleaming white teeth are due to Kolynos toothpaste, and tips on how to jazz up your rations with HP sauce or Oxo.

Newspaper front pages, features and magazines from the 1940s. Plenty of front covers here from both British and overseas newspapers, giving a day-by-day account of WWII, as well as reports on other news events such as the assassination of Gandhi and the engagement and marriage of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip. This section also includes a selection of eye-catching covers from Illustrated magazine featuring some of the decade’s celebrity figures such as cricketer Dennis Compton and television announcer Gillian Webb.

Film magazines including Picture Show and Picturegoer. Adding to our already comprehensive film archives are these movie magazines offering a roll call of silver screen idols as cover stars.
