Mary Evans collection of the week: Thaliastock

Francisco de Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828). Spanish painter.Stilts, 1791-1792. Prado Museum. Madrid. Spain. Date:

There is so much richness and variation in The Thaliastock Collection that it can be hard to pin down. Archaeology, fine art, and world heritage sites sit alongside historical illustrations, manuscripts and frescoes. This 30-year old image archive, based in Spain, describes its collection as images of history, art, literature, and music, as well as geography, economics and science. It covers a bit of everything, and, in addition, its unique hand-coloured section of historical engravings brings some much-needed vibrancy to familiar scenes.

As you might expect, Spanish artists such as Goya feature strongly, as well as photos of historical Spanish places, but the collection has international scope. We have whittled the 15,000 or so images down to a few hundred which can be perused here.
