Mary Evans Picture Library press release.

Mary Evans Picture Library, the UK’s leading source for historical images, is to launch a new blog, The Inquisitive Archivist. Following on from the success of their First World War blog, Picturing the Great War, which launched in 2013, the new blog will feature stories inspired by the library’s vast holdings, as well as updates on recently added content, guest blogs from contributors, spotlights on artists or photographers plus reports on developments at the library.

Our First World War blog has generated a lot of interest over the past two years,” says Luci Gosling, Sales Manager at Mary Evans, ‘and we wanted to introduce a general blog which would allow us to write more extensively about themes from all periods of history, as well as little-known aspects of the library and its collection. We are one of the few image sources remaining who hold original material on-site and this unique position allows us to trawl the archives and come up with stories that we hope will engage and inspire our clients. It may sound clichéd but the library is a perennial source of fascination to those of us who work here with always something new to discover. This blog gives us an opportunity to share our finds with others, and the name, ‘The Inquisitive Archivist’ seemed the perfect title to sum up this appetite for discovery within the archive.

The Inquisitive Archivist completes a trio of Mary Evans blogs alongside Picturing the Great War and Pictures & Poems. Posts so far have looked at themes as diverse as infamous cabaret stars, the Dolly Sisters, ghost-hunter Harry Price, an interview with gadget-collector Maurice Collins and a peek at the library’s incredible set of Black Beauty editions, collected by founder Mary. A special blog post to coincide with Valentine’s Day week-end, suggested a top ten of handsome chaps from history while the latest feature looks at the history of colouring books and includes a somewhat alternative downloadable colouring book for adults.
