Nature Picture Library: panda twins bring joy to France

NPL photographer Eric Baccega has enjoyed the great privilege of documenting the first viable giant panda twins to be born in France. The babies were born to mother Huan Huan at Beauval Zoo, on 2nd August.

Eric’s unique stills and video, showing Huan Huan’s labour, and the subsequent birth and aftercare of two healthy females, provide a unique account of the early development of baby pandas throughout their first week of life. Also captured is the close relationship Huan Huan shares with one of her carers, sent from China especially to welcome the newborns and attend to their needs.
