FOCAL International press release.

FOCAL International, the organisation representing the global footage and content industry plus professional archive researchers and allied facilities, has announced the schedule for its annual Footage Training Week which runs 21-25 September 2015 in London, UK.

The course gives an introduction to the commercial audio-visual industry from archive to exploitation and is designed for anyone, from anywhere in the world, who needs to know more about the footage industry – image archivists, footage researchers, production managers, producers, directors, archive librarians and anyone wanting to know about this industry – whatever your media background, this is a wonderful opportunity to expand your knowledge and appreciation of the world of footage archives, their systems and uses.

Day 1 of the course at the Imperial War Museum covers the history of film and video technology and includes some hands-on experience using different film formats. Day 2 takes delegates out of town to experience restoration processes in action at Pinewood Studios and then it is back to the fast turn around world of media management and newsroom workflow at Sky News. Day 3 covers metadata, cataloguing and clip sales at AP Archive and Getty Images.

The final two days of the week can be booked as separate modules and take place at the Holiday Inn in vibrant Camden. Thursday’s module ‘Know Your Rights‘ provides an up to date briefing of the changes to copyright law when using footage and content, including orphan works, and covers third party rights such as artistes, music, sport and formats. For light relief, the day closes with a fun footage networking party in the Glasshouse overlooking Camden Lock for all FOCAL International members and colleagues to meet and catch-up.

The week closes with a stimulating and informative session on ‘Researching Footage & Content’ led by a panel of professional Researchers who ‘tell it like it is at the coal face’ – from the project briefing, through research, clearance and delivering for the edit.

Registration for the full week costs £900 + VAT and includes all lunches and light refreshments – places are limited so you do need to register as soon as possible. The Copyright and Researcher Conferences, which also include refreshments and a hot buffet, can be booked separately and are open to anyone, as is the Networking Party which includes some drinks and canapes. Please check the individual booking forms using the links provided for prices.
