Museum of English Rural Life

University of Reading, Redlands Road, Reading RG1 5EX, United Kingdom

Previously called the Institute of Agricultural History and then the Rural History Centre, we have now moved back to our original name of the Museum of English Rural Life.

MERL was founded in 1951 and the photographic collections now hold approximately one million images.

The collection is an important resource, covering all aspects of agriculture, the countryside, its people, work and industry.

The archive is particularly strong in images of country people, rural crafts and landscape.
