1854 Media press release – 18 March, 2019.

Female in Focus is a new award that aims to highlight the extraordinary quality of work by women photographers around the world.

It is no secret that there is a gender imbalance within the photography industry, but that is not for lack of interest or talent. While 80% of photography graduates are female, only 15% of professional photographers are women*. We want to understand what is happening to these promising graduates. We want to re-engage the talent that gets lost along the way.

Female in Focus invites women and non-binary photographers to step behind the lens. By valuing everyone and their stories, equally, we can start to make photography more fair and more representative.

The award is split into two categories. In the ‘Stories Category’, photographers can enter up to two bodies of work (up to 10 images each).

The two winners from this category will then be exhibited for a month in October/November 2019 at United Photo Industries in New York City, US, and will be flown to New York for the exhibition opening.

Photographers can also apply to the ‘Single Image Category’. 20 winning images from this category will be exhibited alongside the two winning bodies of work.
