British Pathé re-releases classic documentary series Time to Remember in HD

Following repeated requests from the general public, British Pathé has released its landmark 1950s series Time to Remember. Discovered some years ago in the British Pathé vaults, this series was re-edited by the BBC into a highly-acclaimed abridged version which was screened many times. However, repeated requests from the public to view the original unabridged Time to Remember has led British Pathé to re-scan the series in HD and re-release all 39 episodes on a new online on-demand channel, British Pathé TV.

Time to Remember, the chronicle of the social and cultural forces which shaped the twentieth century, is now available online in full for the first time and the series looks better than ever thanks to its new high-definition transfer.

In the late 1950s, BAFTA award-winning producer Peter Baylis assembled some of the most fascinating and important material captured by renowned newsreel producers British Pathé into a benchmark documentary series. Time to Remember’s unique blend of political, social, and cultural history captivated audiences. It remains, to this day, the definitive account of the emerging modern world.

Its enduring charm led the BBC to produce a revised, abridged version in 2010 for broadcast on BBC4. But this is the first time in decades that the original, uncut version has been released. Time to Remember now promises to inform and entertain a new generation.

The series forms a key component of a new online, on-demand channel that aims to appeal to specialist audiences, such as history buffs, royal watchers, budding artists, and train enthusiasts. British Pathé TV is a subscription-based service and is designed to complement the existing British Pathé newsreel archive (which will remain free-to-view on its separate website and YouTube channels).

Alastair White, General Manager of British Pathé, says of this release, “This is really a victory for people power. We have had so many emails from people who enjoyed the abridged BBC version but wanted to view the original classic series uncut. Not only does it have fantastic footage, now transferred to HD, but it is also a beautifully-produced series that weaves wonderful footage with a poetic script narrated by the outstanding actors of the day.”

The first half of the twentieth century was a period of profound change. During those tumultuous years, empires rose and fell, rights were fought for and trampled on, great machines were built and forgotten, and fashions came and went. Remarkably, this period coincided with the advent of cinema, and for the first time in history, the events of that time, both iconic and commonplace, were captured on film.

Time to Remember provides a rare glimpse into the past as it really was and illustrates the high quality of documentary-making during the late-1950s.

From Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee to the allied victory in 1945, via suffragettes, flappers and music hall stars, the series touches on all aspects of life at that time. The stunning images from British Pathé are matched by an exceptional script, brought to life by a host of celebrated British actors, including Sir Michael Redgrave, Sir Ralph Richardson, Joyce Grenfell, and Sir Anthony Quayle.
